DOES ANYBODY REMEMBER THE OLD SIDNEY CENTER
FLOATING TRESTLE?
It was the largest of its kind when it was built. It was built out of iron and wood. This is a rare double photo taken in 1895 showing the trestle "floating over" the community of Sidney Center. It was built so trains passing through would have an even level to motor through, instead of having to deal with the steep inclines and hills around the town. The trestle was torn down in the 1960s but you can still see remnants of it from the Maywood Train Station in Sidney Center. I always thought it must have been neat to look up from your yard to see a
train passing through!

"Hi Everybody!"

My name is "Big Chuck" and I have been doing morning radio in Oneonta on WDOS for almost a quarter of a century! I have been asked to drop in on this website once in a while to introduce myself to you all. I was born Chuck D'Imperio in Sidney in 1949....so I have been a pretty regular name and face around here for a long time.
I hope you enjoy my posts on this website!
Lets get started......
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST TV SET?
Well television came to the D'Imperio household for the first time by way of a brand new 1953 Philco television set. Isn't it funny how we considered television sets to be pieces of furniture in those days? My mother would polish the wood every week and dust it every day. The kids were instructed to "Not fool with the TV" and it was the most expensive item (other than the house and car) that my parents ever bought up to that time! It even had doors on it to close off the screen.
Here you can see the doors are open.

And remember the TV lamp on the top? Every house had to have one so "we didnt ruin our eyesight." And the TV Guide? You'd get your hand slapped if you ever dared touch it. That was definitely "FOR ADULTS ONLY territory! God forbid the TV Guide ever came up missing, right?
Please search BIG CHUCK on Facebook and join in the conversation and see what other listeners are saying about their very first TV set. And let me know about yours!

|
The Greater Delhi Area Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with The Catskill Ladies Association to Support and Inspire (CLASI), announce that the 17th Delhi Covered Bridge Run will take place on Saturday, June 2nd, 2012. This charitable event consists of a 10K Run, 5K Run and 5K health walk and is being held in conjunction with the Second Annual Delhi Health Festival which will bring all things health related to the Court House Square in Delhi to help inform the public about the resources that are available in this rural area.
The Delhi Covered Bridge Run is the only road race in the greater Delhi area and attracts runners of every level from many neighboring towns and counties. The course is mostly flat with a couple of rolling knolls. The 10K course participants will cross the West Branch of the Delaware River on Delhi's historic covered bridge. 5K participants will enjoy exquisite scenery and beautiful views of SUNY Delhi's college golf course. Timing for this event is provided by Leone Timing.
"Last year we had 200 participants and we're hoping that combining forces with the Health Festival will only help to bring in more runners and walkers" said Amy Beveridge, race director. |
Runners and walkers interested in The Delhi Covered Bridge Run can complete the online entry form by visiting the Cardio Club website www.thecardioclub.com. Long sleeve T-shirts are guaranteed to the first 200 race participants, prizes to the top finishers in each category, plus wine raffle, free massages and other gifts to be awarded to race participants! Fees for signing up are $25 when you sign up at the Race on June 2, but if you sign up online it's $20.
Proceeds from this event will be contributed towards college scholarships for two local Delaware County graduating seniors whose lives were impacted by athletics. In addition, a donation will be made to the Delhi Pool. "We are actively recruiting sponsors for this great event and these great causes." says Jen Green, avid runner and local business women. "I'm excited to be a part of this years event in more ways than just running."

The year was 1961. Tensions ran high in central Europe where all eyes were on Berlin. Thousands of American G.I.s were stationed in Germany far from family and home. When it came time for the U.S. military to choose an entertainer to go to Berlin and bring a little R&R for the boys, they chose America's #1 female vocalist to make the trip. Check out this great video of CONNIE FRANCIS singing her mega-hit "Where the Boys Are" to our soldiers in Berlin in 1961. Just click below and turn up your speakers!
